Day one in the USA - By Helen Wyman

I have arrived safe and well in Portland Oregon and what a place. It’s so beautiful here and I really enjoyed my first day out on the bike and can’t wait to keep riding as I prepare for my first race in Seattle this weekend.

I’m trying to keep things as American as possible, just so that I can get a real taste of life ‘State Side’. It’s my first time outside Europe and I want to get the most of the experience. I’ve been really lucky to have some great support here.

Powerful Germany crowned champions again

The German's, World and European champions coming into the Final, were strong favourites to make it fifth consecutive title in Finland, but didn't account for the determination of Hope Powell's side.

When they put two quick-fire goals past Rachel Brown inside 22 minutes, the Germans may have thought it was job done. But England fought back to make it 2-1 before half-time, then 3-2 early in the second half.

New Feature September Issue 09

I was always active in sports, softball, track, volleyball, horseback riding. Sports are in our genes as I came from a baseball household.

How did she get into it?

M
y story is somewhat comical looking back at it. I left a great job in Boston to become an intern for the Hudson Valley Renegades at the age of twenty-six. I couldn't get a job in baseball right out of college and I didn’t want to get a job based on nepotism. I was successful in Boston, but baseball kept calling me.

I left my position there once I convinced the Hudson Valley Renegades to hire me as their intern making $400 a month, all to be a part of the game I grew up loving. I started working for the Renegades and in 2 months I got promoted to a director position. Less then a year later the ownership group created a job for me overseeing six minor league baseball teams. My role has expanded as the years have progressed.

Interview with Louise Rogers

Basically I began athletics training years ago when I was in school. I was always quite talented at sports, particularly sprinting.

However when I left school I began attending the gym with my sister, simply going along and spending time on the stepper whilst my sister did her work out.

From this point on I became quite interested in gym training and whilst at university I trained to be a fitness instructor and personal trainer.

After I had completed the Premier training personal training course I began working at a local gym and I was paired up with a man that was training for strong man events.

Race Walker Jane Saville Retires

Very often in sport we see the triumphs of athletes at the big events and then they quietly diminish to be replaced with the latest talent. However this was most definitely not the case for Race Walker Jane Saville who sustained a career spanning 20 years; and she even managed time to answer some of our questions at Women’s Sport Report.

Jane participated in every sport as a child, “I started ‘Little Athletes’ at the age of 4, its athletics for kids in Australia and New Zealand.” Jane “loved it, it was like a big social event for me.” The young athlete enjoyed winning relay in the Under 7 event, a sprinting ability that Jane admitted didn’t last long.

Great New Legs -

All girls want great looking legs for summer, and many believe they have great legs donning short skirts with legs like twiggy! But in all honesty, skinny legs aren’t particularly sexy. They’re just skinny, and of course weak. Larger legs are often more shapely and sexy, certainly stronger, but a happy medium is always best. Men love good legs, and men love strong legs. They may comment on long legs, but don’t always take that as a ‘sexy compliment’.

Lieutenant Lucy O'Connor

I joined the Navy in 2001 and it was during my general training on board HMS Grafton in 2002, where I donned my first pair of boxing gloves. The initial intention was to get fit, but the boxing soon turned competitive and I stepped in the ring for my first bout in June 2005. Three years on, I am the number 1 female featherweight in Britain, I have represented England on 15 occasions, and am ranked number 3 in Europe and number 5 in the World.

This is a three-step process. Warming up is performed at 50-60% intensity of the maximum heart rate for 5 to 10 minutes. Then, aerobic exercise is done for minimum 20 minutes at 70-80% maximal heart rate intensity.
